President's Update - Sept 2011 |
As the season draws to a close, it’s time to reflect on the second half of the season. We have continued to get good numbers to our intraclub games and show that we all enjoy our footy for fun, even though the games have stepped up a notch. The committee has been very humbled by the commitment of our players and we do hope this will continue into 2012. The first year of the Sydney Cup may have had some teething problems, but will only get better from the experience of this year and years to come. We played in the Sydney Cup Final against the Wombats, but unfortunately fell short of a victory this year. Hopefully we can take it out next year and in the years to come. It was great to see Graeme Henley take out the Best and Fairest Player Award for the Cup, well done Graeme. The NSW Carnival was also played on August 28 and although our draw was a tough one, we performed very well and we were very competitive in all 3 games. It was a long day and there were a lot of tired bodies by the end of it, but everyone who participated did a good job of representing the club. Financially, the club is in a good position, especially with the generous support of our new major sponsor – Veolia Environmental Services. Our decision to hold games most weeks this year, (instead of just fortnightly), has meant more players and more income. We expect this trend will continue next year and means that we have the opportunity to look at more ways to return the benefit of these funds to our members, such as an improved end of season function. For those of you going to the National Carnival, good luck and enjoy the experience that it will offer, I hope you all come back winners. I would like to thank the committee for their efforts, support and involvement throughout the year and do hope that the club continues to grow the way that it has so far. We still have some social games planned over the next month as well as some summer games so for those of you wanting to keep playing and keep the fitness up, keep an eye on the website and email for details. Let me take this opportunity to thank all our members and non-members for your involvement throughout this season and I hope you all have enjoyed the year to date and continue to enjoy FOOTY FOR FUN in the future. Regards, Sheilsy. |

President's Update - 2011 Season |
Our 2011 season is now well under way and has gotten off to a pretty good start. We’ve played 6 Intraclub Games and completed our first Sydney Cup comp game on the weekend. All games have had an excellent turnout with a couple of games having so many we’ve played with three sides to accommodate everyone. We held a few group training sessions early in the season with great turnouts and we continue to have players elect to attend mid-week training sessions with the under 16s from the Quakers Hill Bombers. There’s no expectation for anyone to attend training, that’s just how keen some of us are to play footy, and to keep fit. We’re making progress towards locking more games for the coming months. As many of you probably aren’t aware, our games and grounds are only able to be organised once all the junior and senior club games are locked in which can take some time. We’re grateful for the assistance we get from the clubs that host our games and rest assured, we are constantly trying to organise future games. In previous years, the club has only played fortnightly, but given the interest and player commitment this year, we are trying to have a game most weeks. In addition to the great merchandise that is included with memberships, members are certainly getting great value for money. In addition to our normal intraclub games, we have a couple of carnival games coming up as well as three remaining Sydney Cup comp games. These will be updated on our website as the details are confirmed, but I’d urge you to register your interest early so we can confirm our teams for attendance. You can contact Rowdy via

to add your name to the list/s. Financially, the club is running very well and we are enjoying good cash flow with the ability to pay all bills as they come due and expect this to continue or improve throughout the season with retained profit at the end of the year. This will allow us to spend more money on equipment for the club, an improved end of season event as well as an increase in the amount and types of merchandise available before the start of next season. Much of this has come about through the additional players and members we have been able to attract this year, but in particular, we have two new sponsors which have donated money and goods to the club. Anthony Kininjjew has paid for a complete set of new team jumpers emblazoned with his company name – ALK Bricklaying, and Scott Bond from Veolia has donated our new club bags and hats. Please show your appreciation to these guys, it means a lot to the club to have their support, thank you both. On behalf of the 2011 committee, we thank you for your involvement so far and we look forward to a continued successful year for the club. If you have any suggestions on anything to do with the club, or can offer any assistance, please let us know. Sheilsy President. |

Competition and Carnival Games |
We will be attending a carnival game in Newcastle in June, and one in Gosford in July. These are being hosted by the local clubs and involve other clubs like ours, putting teams together to compete on the day in a round robin format. It's always a fun day and well worth the trip. For the Sydney-based clubs, local carnivals have been replaced this year with a new competition format with the four teams of Northwest Sydney Redbacks, Sydney Rocks, Macarthur Wombats and the newly-formed UTS Bats, competing for the Sydney Cup. The winner is decided on points aggregate after playing four comp games each. Carnival and comp games are all available for paid-up members, over 35 years of age. We need numbers in advance, so please contact Rowdy -

President's Report - 2010 Season |
Another great year of growth for the North West Sydney AFL Masters FC. We settled on and have embraced our new name, the Redbacks, and have grown in stature for it. We were represented at the National Carnival and entered full teams at several Mini-Carnivals. Our teams are becoming more competitive at the carnivals and our local game numbers continue to grow. The Redbacks carnival guernseys were worn with great honour for the first time at the Central Coast mini-carnival and a full squad of us proudly took the field and competed admirably. The carnival strip was also brought out of the bag at the NSW and Illawarra mini-carnivals which we also fielded full teams at. Well done to all those guys who wore the strip for the rest of us and showed the rest of the NSW Masters clubs that the Redbacks are on the improve and will give them an even bigger run for their money next season. Especially with the summer games up and running. Ray McConnell and Steve Sheil represented NSW for us at the National Carnival. Ray says he had a shocker in all 3 games – and I suppose we had better believe him because if he had done one good thing we would never hear the end of it. Bad luck mate. Steve Sheil on the other hand had a blinder, as he often does with us, and was picked in the All Australian team. A fantastic achievement and a great honour for him. Well done Steve. We didn’t play at as many venues this year, as scheduling with the junior clubs is proving more and more difficult. But we must continue to involve as many of the local clubs as we can and involve more and more fathers. We played at Grey Gums, Bruce Purser, Cook Park, Richmond and Quakers Hill as well as an away game at Rosedale. All games were well represented and ranged from 26 to 53 players. Bruce Purser being the most popular and Wright Reserve being the most reliable as far as numbers go. Members numbers have again been higher than last season and the camaraderie of the club continues to increase. We have some good sponsorship opportunities in the pipeline and we already have commitment for a 3rd set of jumpers plus bags and caps for our new season. The members have asked for summer games and training, so with the help of the Elliotts we have access to Doonside High School oval on Saturdays and Sundays. Thank you to the Committee for their help through the year. Also all those who ran water and helped on game day with goal umpiring and time keeping and all the other odd jobs, we are very grateful. Thanks to the umpires who continue to be an integral part of the club. All the junior clubs who have helped with grounds and other facilities, especially Kellyville Magpies who always do a great job at making us welcome. David and Michelle at Quakers Hill for their continued support this year and who have also secured Doonside High for us this summer. Committee meetings are generally held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month. Meetings are normally held at the Quakers Inn, Quakers Hill, commencing 7.30pm. To date, the attendees have been committee members, but we welcome anyone with an interest in the club to attend. The more ideas and input we can get, the better we can make our club. It is your club and the committee wants to give you what you feel the club needs. Without more input we are not sure how you want the club run and what else you would like the club to provide. So, come along and have your say so we can make North West Sydney Masters AFL Club even better. The dates for committee meetings will be published on the fixtures pages. |
