Sunday August 15th, Greenway Oval, Carnes Hill

We had a great turn-up at the NSW Carnival with 22 brave Redbacks fronting for this State Competition. We looked fantastic with our full strip – shorts with Redbacks logo, carnival guernseys and black socks. Best looking team on the park by far! We had our banner on display under the picnic shelter and plenty of wives and kids as well. The weather was great until about 12:30, when we all spent about 15 minutes sheltering behind Ray and various other windbreaks when the wind and rain became bothersome for a while. Anyway, about the football……….

There were representatives from North West Redbacks, Sydney Rocks, Camden Wombats, Central Coast Phoenix, Bathurst Bushrangers, Newcastle, Central West, Illawarra, Wagga and ACT in attendance and the football was fast and furious. We played our first game against a very fit and tall Sydney Rocks team – who went on to win the day. The first half was fairly even with lots of hard fought ball from the centre being cut off at their half back line by their taller men. Much of the game was played in the centre of the field and I think we all had plenty of touches around the ground. The backs worked very hard with JJ, Jason, Rowdy and Rob fighting hard again and again to repel the Rocks. I will name everyone later, but suffice it to say, everyone put in 100% in both the games and represented the Redbacks with great honour and looked great doing it.

The second game was played after a 2 hour break in which time one of the very unfortunate Central Coast players broke his leg right in front of us. The poor bloke was playing hard at the ball against a very determined opponent playing equally as hard at it, and bang! Much pain and a long rehab. Great commitment guys! Luckily the only serious injury of the day, I think.

Back to that second match! We played Central Coast in another tight and hard fought match. It was more fun than the first game, as we had played these bloke recently in a friendly and we were more evenly matched. The scores went back and forth and the rivalry was more friendly. Again all the Redbacks contributed well and we all had plenty of the ball.

The inaugural NSW Carnival trophy was won by Sydney Rocks. A beautiful 4cm thick Red Gum plague in the shape of NSW was presented to the winners, which the Redbacks covet for next year. Thanks to NSW AFL Masters for putting on a great day.

As for the Redbacks, well done guys! We looked like an professional outfit, with our banner and our polo shirts. We put our full strip on with guernseys, shorts and socks all matching and we looked and behaved like a team of mates and, I don’t know about you, but I felt like a team too. With a couple more seasons together and maybe a few more of you tall guys turning up for the carnivals and we will be a force to reckon with.

Now, the Redbacks Warriors who represented our club at the NSW Carnival for 2010 are;

Jerome Jones, Neil McCall, Rob Watkins, Daryle Roberts, Tony Nixon, Rodney Vinnecombe, Ray McConnell, John Reece(C), Paul Smith, Brett Arnold, Shane Sweep, Les Cass, John Marsden, Steve Sheil, Tim McNab, Matt Smith, Tim Costello, Chris Brown, Phil Scandizzo, Lui Lister, Jason Toman and Tom Woodrow. Thank you also Jeff Clark (Newcastle) for help in the ruck in the second game (sorry about Lui).

You were fine ambassadors for our budding club and played well above your weight on the day. Thank you for captaining and leading us by your fine example of playing very hard at the ball and supporting your team mates to the extreme, John Reece. The best of our players, as decided by the majority of our team mates, was presented to Daryle Roberts by the NSW President. He seems to find space all over the ground and is so unselfish with the ball that he tries to make the rest of us look as good as he is.The Mug of The Day goes to Lui Lister. Although he fought hard all day and is a fine football player, with good speed and fine hands and he hardly made a mistake all day. If only he hadn’t tackled the shit out of our own ruckman, loosing possession for us at a very critical stage in the game.

A grand day all round, with a good number of Redbacks in attendance, fairly fine weather and a great atmosphere for football. Thanks to all the club members who represented the Redbacks well and to NSW AFL Masters for a well-organised day.

Saturday August 7th, Cook Park, St Marys

This pretty little oval is home to the St Clair Crows Jnr FC and was bathed in sun as the 30 enthusiastic players took the field.

There were plenty of local boys, some who had not played before, and they all seemed to land on the Blues. The teams were fairly evenly matched and everyone enjoyed plenty of touches of the football. There were the usual standouts, with Danny and Robbie tussling it out at every opportunity. There was a great contest at every ball-up, with Paul Meyer keeping up with Steve Coleman (who kindly went over to Blue to even it up). Daryle Roberts continues to show fabulous skill and vision with selfless distribution of the ball. John Reece is one of the toughest men out there and I am surprised he can walk most Mondays. There were plenty of sweet passages of play with the Kellyville boys (Keith, Keith and Al) showing skill and Scott Duffus getting a few goals. Some great horizontal marks were taken around the centre of the ground – how are the elbows and knees guys?

Thank you to the Crows for putting on a great afternoon and making Masters welcome at their club. Special thanks to John and Julie Dimond who promoted and organised the game, Michael Borel who kept time and took photo’s and the folks on the BBQ who cooked us a free feed. Also, all the local Crows dads who had a kick with us, we hope you had a good time and feel free to join us any time.

Barb McConnell handled most of our paperwork as I was late due to junior club commitments and did a fine job, as always. She is such a sweetheart. As opposed to her husband, who again gets the Mug of the Week - for stealing one of my few opportunities for a goal on the line and claiming it for himself. Oh, by the way, did I tell you about the goal I got?……………

Saturday July 31st, Greygums Oval, Cranebrook

After another wet week in Sydney, we managed to be booked on what must have been the only ground still open. There were many comments about goggles and flippers being required before hitting the field and once Tony had managed to seconde a last-minute 16s Player to umpire, we hit the ground for a 12 a side mud-wrestling competition, with a bit of footy thrown in.

The first couple of goals went to the Blues courtesy of some good clearances from the centre, but then the yellow team turned it around and began to even up the imaginary scoreboard. The conditions made handling very difficult but the tackling and attack at the ball did not let off. It was always amusing to see a hard-kicked ball stop dead when hitting a water patch, only to see players slide straight past it then scramble back to wrestle it off each other.

We had a couple of new guys playing with plenty of chase and tackle and we are beginning to see that although Duncan could give a cheetah a run for it's money, (but not Ray McConnell to the esky after a game), he can also boot the ball a long way with improving accuracy. You could see the relief as he was let out of the full back cage and allowed to run free through the centre.

Jim fought hard for the yellows and kicked a couple of nice goals. Keith and Phil worked tirelessly through the centre and forward line for the blues, and Danny and Robbie did what they always do so well, getting possession after possession followed up with effective disposals. It took the Blue team until half time to realise something needed to be done to combat them, and the only thing for it was to split them up! Dale loved the wet and threw himself into the mud at every opportunity, often with the aim of taking someone down with him. Rowdy had some touches but his jumper didn't look like it so Dale offered up some mud with his boot to complete the look.

Everyone contributed admiriably in very difficult conditions with low numbers, but as seen in the team photo, we all had a great game and enjoyed it anyway!

Thanks very much to Brownie and family for keeping the ground open for us at the end of a long day for them and thanks to Jonas and his mate for helping out with the umpiring.

Sunday July 25th, Adcock Park, West Gosford

Central Coast mini-Carnival.

What a great day we had at Adcock Oval Gosford hosted by Central Coast Phoenix. 19 Redbacks warriors in very impressive new guernseys took the field in 2 twenty minute per half games against Phoenix then Rocks. Then we played twenty minutes against each of them again. There was score taken and a trophy was presented, but that was not the point. We looked great! Plus it was fantastic to play as a team against the other 2 clubs.

I will name all the guys who played at the end, but I need to mention a couple here. John Reece captained and encouraged us throughout the day, plus took away a couple of bottles of wine as our best player. Well done John and thanks. Matt Smith worked tirelessly to make sure the guernseys were ready for this carnival and they came up a treat. Great work Matt. Sheilsy ran like a mongrel all day and came under some pretty hard scrutiny at times and bested it. Shane Sweep pulled off another miraculous right pocket goal – becoming his specialty. Duncan McIntosh can now run and kick at the same time and has been seen handballing as well – he is developing into a fine footballer. Rowdy drove three drunken footballers home in a strange car with surprising tolerance – good work Neil.

Well done all those who came and also thanks to the families who supported us on the day. Here are the names of your champions:-Jerome Jones (JJ), Steve Sheil (Sheilsy), John Reece, Tony Nixon, Neil McCall (Rowdy), Pablo Anwander, Matt Smith, Brett Arnold, Paul Smith, Phil Scandizzo, Rodney Vinnecombe, Jim Roche, Jason Toman, Rob Watkins, Colin Amos, Ray McConnell, Duncan McIntosh, Pat McBriarty, Peter Eller. The guys represented the club admirably and should be congratulated.

Sunday July 18th, Wright Reserve, Quakers Hill

A beautiful Sunday morning saw 14 a side take the field for a fast running game at Quakers Hill. With the likes of Col, Cain, Jim, Brett, Duncan, Michael J, Daryle, Sheilsy, and Rob all doing their stuff it was a fairly fast affair and plenty of class was shown. Pat is displaying more of his skill and tenacity each game as does Reecey.  Plenty of goals were scored, the first being from Paul Gow. It was great to see Geoff Clarke come down from Newcastle for a kick with us – he had a ton of possession and great skill and pace in the centre of the ground. There were plenty of highlights on the day, but the one for me was Shane Sweep’s miraculous goal from hard in the right pocket. I was behind him (as I often am in defence) and swear there was no more than a centimetre between the post and the ball on either side. Rodney Vinnecombe scored 3 behinds on the day and earns the Mug of the Week.
