Sunday June 26th, Rofe Park Print E-mail

Well it has finally happened, at least 60 players turned up for a game last Sunday at the Hornsby Berowra Junior AFL Clubs Ground, Rofe Park.

Thank you to Mark Smith, President of that Club and his associates and what a team of hosts they all turned out to be. With only 2 weeks notice they turned it on a treat. The local side told us they would have about 15 players to commence the day and have a game against our Club. We arrived to a cast of thousands. Congratulations to the locals, they mustered 18 staunch and true men and stuck it to us for the first 2 quarters. As a result of the massive turnout it was decided late to play 6 quarters of footy with three teams, thus allowing everybody 4 quarters each.

It was agreed that Hornsby Berowra would have a bit of a blow after the first 2 quarters and then allow our team to follow through with 4 quarters in preparation for our game against UTS. They were then to come back on for the last 2 quarters of  6 against the remainder of the players. Players were still turning up to play after the game commenced and as a result we ended up with plenty of guys.

I must say at this stage that this game was originally going to be a friendly to promote the game in the Hornsby District but if the numbers and enthusiasm are any indication we may find ourselves up against a new Masters club sometime in the future! Hornsby Berowra Eagles played very well for the first 2 quarters and held our blokes to a close score and then they had a rest for 2 and came back on and acquitted themselves well over the last 2 in what I thought was a tie.

Thanks to Gosford, they turned up with at least 8 players, UTS had a few and Sydney also had a few turn up.  I do not think that any club in Sydney has had a turn up like that and even though we had a couple of hiccups because of the numbers the day went very well.  I am not going to go into detail about the games and single out players for mention, but just simply say that the day was tremendous and played in the true spirit of FOOTY FOR FUN.  I hope that everybody managed to get to work on Monday morning and believe me I know that you would have all been stiff and sore and you deserved to be for the effort you all put in.
