Saturday September 4th, Bruce Purser Print E-mail

A picturesque Bruce Purser Oval greeted the Redbacks for another great afternoon of football. With 14 a side there was always going to be plenty of space to be found on the park.

The Blue side made the most of the space in the first quarter with Graham Henley, Darryle Roberts and Duncan McIntosh providing plenty of ball out of the middle. The Blues forwards were lining up for the ball as Sweepy, Scott Bond and Adam Taylor all got early goals.

The Black team bounced back in the second quarter as Steve Coleman, Bucks and Mal Purvis got their hands to the ball first and started to outrun the Blues. The Blues back line was having to work hard as Tim McNab, Les Cass & Col Amos found space on the rebound making tough work for Luis Lister, Grant Buscombe and James Setriggan.

The third quarter was a see-sawing affair as both teams were doing plenty of running but very little effective scoring. Laurie Littleton even got creative with a drop kick attempt from 30 out. The run of Mark Simfandorfer led the Blues forward on numerous occasions only for the forwards to miss some easy chances.

At the other end the Black team lead by Rowdy (what's he doing forward?) with some great marks but a reluctance to kick for goal (outside his 15mtr arc....!), gave up some easy shots to Tim Costello and John Grimshaw. As the game drew to an end the game became a bit scrappy - big ground, tired players led to a number of bodies look forward to the final siren.

Plenty of Footy for Fun and a special thanks to Keith Leggett for getting us on Bruce Purser at late notice.

Sunday August 28th - NSW Carnival Print E-mail

The NSW carnival was played at Fairfax Reserve Harrington Park.

Our first game against UTS was a good contest and was played at a fast pace. Tim McNab, Brett Arnold & Andrew Quicke provided a solid back line and repelled a number of UTS forward moves whilst Louis Lister, Matt Smith & John St Barry gave us some run and rebound off half back. Jon Yerbury provided good ball to Jim & Bucks with some deft ruck work as well as adding some extra height to the backs. When the ball went forward through the hard work of the midfield both John Grimshaw and Paul Smith took some good marks off a number of strong leads. The game was hard fought and whilst we matched them well in the first half, UTS came away with the points.

Our second game saw us take on the Wombats in a replay of the Sydney Cup final. The midfielders (Jim & Bucks) took to chasing and getting the hard ball providing good supply to the likes of Craig Peisley and John Grimshaw. Rowdy took a great mark in the forward pocket showing some marking prowess but his kicking didn't match (back to the back line for him). The back line continued to stand up to the Wombats forays into the forward line, and John Yurbury was outstanding as he worked across half back to give us extra height and rebound. John St Barry worked hard both in the ruck and around the ground, while Chris Fantham chased hard even with his sore back. The end result had us going down, but a great effort by all.

Our third game had us up against the team from the Hunter. Whilst we started well, the day's effort was starting to take its toll on some of our "seasoned" bodies. The fresh legs of Scotty Bond and Les Cass provided some run and chase. The back line worked hard to repel any forward entries but were up against much taller opponents. John Yurbury provided a highlight completing a spoil that cleared the boundary fence (and nearly a few spectators).

We finished the day 0-3 but it was a great effort by all on the day. The games were played in the spirit of Footy for Fun.

Sunday August 14th, Rosedale Oval - Sydney Cup Final Print E-mail

Finals footy, as kids it’s all we wanted to play for and now as big kids the passion hasn't changed, so a nice Sunday afternoon greeted us at Rosedale Oval as we took on the Wombats for the Sydney Cup.

Both teams were keen to take out the inaugural cup and from the first bounce the Wombats jumped out to an early lead. The Redbacks bounced back with a left foot snap from Shielsy after some good work from Damo to bring the ball down. The battle for the ball at ground level was hard and the hits both on & off the ball were being felt by everyone. The midfield led by John, Bucks, Daryle and Shielsy were doing their best to get first touch on the footy but a number of our forward entries couldn't find the mark. Our back line led be Jason, Brett & Tim threw everything at stopping the long range shots coming at them, and Duncan, Les and Bunny provided plenty of rebound run. We started to claw back on the scoreboard as Jon St Barry goaled after a great grab and Sweepy snapped one from the pocket.

Half time had the game poised on a knifes edge. With only a few goals in it either team could have broken away. The Redbacks worked hold to hold back the flood of possession that the Wombats were getting and some hard running from Graham Henley, Matt Smith kept us in the contest. With the clock ticking down Bunny launched a long range bomb after some working his way through traffic. Jason who had held up the back line snuck forward to take a great pack mark to convert for a goal. Minutes later he showed some fancy footwork to toe one out of the pack for his second.

The final siren went leaving us short of a win but having put in a great effort against good opposition. It was great effort by all the Redbacks who played with a special mention to Graham Henly who took out the Best & Fairest trophy for the competition, a huge effort.

Coaches Report:

Sunday 14th August 2011 as the Inaugural Masters Cup Grand Final is now etched in each and every Redback player on the day as the one that got away.

Being beaten by 20 or so points was not a good result considering the number of times that the Redbacks went into their forward 50 - it would be easily said that we also spent most of the game in the Redbacks forward 50, however, there was just no attempt to score, but rather we continued to pass off to team mates in less than suitable positions.

Granted the opposition Wombats team was a larger stronger and well-drilled team. It was very obvious that they train and play together on a regular basis, as almost every thrust down the field and into the forward line was with purpose and executed with precision.

Still, the back line blokes held strong and rebounded to advantage, but again the delivery into the forward line was poor.

Did we miss Paul Smith - yep sure did!  This is a bloke who consistently kicks a bag full, and would have split open the forward line with his rampaging leads.

The game was played hard and tough, with full Carnival rules the order of the day, and it was also played at a frenetic pace from start to finish. John St.Barry and Graeme Henley, were the leading big men on the ground and late in the last quarter Damo was also good as a tap ruckman.  Bucks in the middle as a follower was a candidate for BOG - we could have thrown a blanket over he and Graeme Henley.

As Captain for the day, Jason Toman at full back had a couple of goals kicked on him early from some extremely accurate passes by Wombat players to their leading full forward - and then he kicked his couple of goals from beyond the arc ie, about 55 meters out. Jason got his own back though when late in the last quarter he went to full forward and took a couple of speckies and kicked some long goals to almost steal the game for the Redbacks.

Having Mark Bunn go into the middle in the last quarter was a very good move by Ray as Mark was the catalyst for the Redbacks resurgence. The bloke is pure class, and his ability to break packs and kick truly to winnable contests is uncanny.

Hodgey got better as the game went on, and wouldn't we love to have this bloke playing week in week out. Jimmy was his usual enthusiastic self, shimmying and backing in and out of trouble. Sheilsy played, as an All Australian should...even though he is playing on one leg and numerous other ailments that are wearing him down during this long season.

Duncan continues to get better and better as the big games come around and exposure to this type of game week in week out will see him hone his kicking and hand ball skills. Duncan has great anticipation to read where the footy is going to be, and with his turn of speed this is a great skill to have. Brett held up well in the back line, sometimes against overwhelming odds - I saw on numerous occasions where he was crunched, but in the first instance never went to ground, (that is the perfect footy lesson for all) and he often beat 2 x opponents, to push the ball forward. Tim McNab got better as the game went on, with his height being a definite advantage, with which to stick the fist in and spoil many times over.

Grimmy pulled down a couple of impressive marks during the game and when the likes of Churchie came on late in the game, there was all of a sudden some structure to the forward line - it is amazing what a bit of directive lip service can do. Graig Piesly was a little bit down with obviously the leg worrying him big time, but like everyone else he still contributed whilst he was on the ground as did Les Cass, who will be better for the run.

David Livy was good value when he came off the bench and into the back line - he certainly made the Wombat players think twice with his aggression. Sweepy swooped in for some valuable touches and could have had quite a few more goals, hitting the goal post a couple of times as well. Matt Smith certainly kept his opponent honest, although we did not assist Matt very much at half forward, especially when we deliver the footy on the ground to a player who is so good in the air, where he does take a great grab.

Overall, it was a good game from ALL the Redback players, with only a 15 x minute period during the third quarter, our biggest down fall, as other than that we controlled the tempo for most of the game.

The way that the Redbacks came home in the last quarter was very pleasing from a Coaches perspective, as there was never any intention by the players to give up even though we were almost 6 x goals down at the start.

The experience that we continue to gain from games against the top teams will hold us in good stead for the future.

Saturday August 6th, Wright Reserve Print E-mail

A Saturday afternoon of Footy for Fun, what else could we ask for with another great turnout for the Redbacks.

The Black team started well posting the first couple of goals with some great work from the middle from John Yerbury and Bucks.

The Blues bounced back with Scott Bond finding plenty of space in the forward line. This was his day as he went on to kick a career high of 10 (Scotty - Gary Lyons called and asked if you could help out!).

The Black team responded with lots of run out of the middle and the wings providing plenty of ball into the leads of Craig Peisley, Tim Costello (bagging 6) and Keith Phillips.

John Yerbury launched a 60mtr bomb, which I'm pretty sure was a miskick, nice effort though. Duncan provided plenty of run off half back and snuck into the forwards to have a long range, pretty certain he told one forward to stay away from him so he could get a shot.

Graham Henly covered plenty of ground and racked up plenty of possessions while Darryl and Sweepy argued over who could find the most space on the wings.

Rowdy and Ray battled in the pocket (bit like Clash of the Titans), and Keith Leggett, Lui Lister and Brett Arnold provided backline rebound for their respective teams.

Other special mentions go to Danny & Robbie for joining us and to James playing in his first game of AFL.

A great day out for all and football was the winner, definitely Footy for Fun.

Sunday July 17th, Quakers Hill - Comp vs Sydney Rocks Print E-mail

Another great winter’s day at Wrights Reserve greeted the Redbacks and Sydney Rocks as we played our third comp game for the year.

It was a new day for the Redbacks as Graham Henley debuted as captain and Sheilsy as coach. From the first bounce the Redbacks showed that they were up for the game. The efforts of John St Barry in the ruck, Bucks & Daz at ground level provided plenty of dash out of the middle. Once out of the middle there was plenty of great delivery into our forward line with the forwards lining up for possessions. Whether it be Graham's attack at the ball, (where he attacked the earth with his head but still came up with a goal), Paul's leads from the square, Nathan's awareness in the pocket or Craig's over-the-shoulder effort, it was raining goals.

Our back line responded every time Sydney came at them with defence that stood like the Great Wall. Jason, Tim, Lui, John, Les and Andrew just kept sending the ball back out which allowed Bunny to set up the play to Duncan, Brett & Chris to move the ball up the wings with plenty of run. The consistent run & carry followed by accurate kicking made it a great team effort. Sydney were under manned & out gunned but could not contain the Redbacks run.

Some key moments - who can forget Bunny running his opponent around the square, Duncan's shot at goal that was marked on the line robbing him of his maiden goal, (you know who you are), and Shielsy directing traffic off the bench - did more than he does on-field ! At the end of the game the Redbacks ran out convincing winners with a 110 point margin, but more importantly, the game was played in the right spirit as it always has between these two teams - "Footy for Fun".

A quick mention to the two Redbacks who played for Sydney to make up their numbers - Paul Gow & Michael Tanner, thanks for giving up your spots on the team to help the opposition out. It’s not who you are playing for, it’s just getting out and having a go, well done guys from all your team-mates.

Saturday July 2nd, Quakers Hill - Comp vs UTS Print E-mail

Well what can I say guys, we got smashed by an extremely fit and very young side in UTS.  They certainly had all the answers and are a well-drilled unit used to playing competitive games.

I was really proud of the way you played - not one of you gave up and you fought it out to the finish with many passages of good play.  Graham Henley, Matt Smith, Steve Sheil, Paul Smith and the old bloke, Jason Toman, all had good games.  Damo made a comeback from a long layoff and played well at centre half back as well as in the ruck.  Jon St Barry did very well against strong opposition and ran himself into the ground.  He even came off of his own accord to let one of the guys play off the bench, I think he was a bit out of breath as well.  Keiron Humbler showed great composure and played with great controlled aggression the whole way through, until he had to leave for family reasons.

Tim McNab took a number of great grabs around the ground and Alister Organ covered plenty of ground getting to the loose ball.  Brett Arnold, Peter Bradley, Phil Scandizzio, Louie and Shane Sweep all made nuisances of themselves for the opposition and got plenty of possessions.  John (Grimmo) Grimshaw, Josh Foster, Sean Riley and Duncan did plenty of running, along with Andrew Quicke and Jimmy Roche.

I want to mention everybody in this report because you all deserve it and so here we go.  Daryl Buckingham, Scott Bond, Tim Costello, Michael Tanner, Brad King, Keith Phillips, David Livy, Grant Buscombe all did their job on the day and I thank you all for your effort.

To the guys that played for the opposition, each and every one of you showed that you are true Clubmen for doing that and I just wish that you had not played quite so well.  Keith Legget, Paul Gow, Craig Peisley and anybody that I have inadvertently missed, I thank you for your effort on the day.  The time-keeper Billy gave up his game, as did our goal umpire, Mark Traynor, again showing great club spirit. I know it is not easy to give up a game like that and we appreciate it.

It was great to see our guys playing the game in the true spirit of Masters Football - FOOTY FOR FUN.

Sunday July 31st, Bruce Purser Oval Print E-mail

A beautiful Sunday afternoon greeted the Redbacks as we ventured to Bruce Purser Oval for the first time in 2011.

Redbacks members were joined by a number of Sydney Rocks players and Geoff Clark all the way from Hunter while Ray finally made it back out on the ground.

From the first bounce the Blue team jumped away like a shot out of a gun. They won the ball from the middle through Graham Henley and Jim Roche. Once out of the centre they delivered the ball into Paul Smith who lead hard from the square on a number of occasions.

As the game progressed, the Black teams "twin towers" John Newberry & John St Barry started to win more ball out of the centre and around the ground. Steve Shiels kept finding space on the wings and leading the Blacks into attack. Churchy pulled a drop kick out of his bag of tricks, did he mean it? he'll say he did.

Steve Coleman, the biggest small-forward pocket we’ve seen, showed some left foot magic slotting one from a tight angle and Geoff Clark & Sweepy did their impression of David & Goliath.

Late in the third quarter the tide started to turn for the Black side as they clawed back the deficit. A long-range bomb from John Newberry, Tim Costello with a couple had the game in the balance.

As the game neared its end the Black team kept pushing with the backline standing tall with Josh and Brendan thwarting a number of attacks. Mark was attacking the ball even as he was trying to limp off the field.

In the end the Blue team won by about 10 points but it was a great day for footy and fun was had by all.

Saturday July 9th, Wright Reserve Print E-mail

Another good turnout given the school holidays with 33 guys arriving on a sunny Saturday afternoon - a perfect day for football.

The first quarter felt pretty even to start but saw the Blacks get a few extra goals thanks to the combination of Graham in the ruck and Michael Jeffrey's run out of the centre. The Blues held ground pretty well but were easily outnumbered down back. Daryle Roberts arrived late but  quickly got plenty of ball and was assisted by Keith Leggett getting plenty of penetration inside 50.

The second quarter saw the Blues turn things around. Brett Arnold ran loose across half back and the back line picked up their players well and began to hold back nearly everything the opposition threw at them. Simon and Matt worked together with some great overhead marking, Josh provided plenty of run out of defence time and time again. Paul and Keith Phillips worked hard across the middle pushing the ball forward.

During the third quarter, Tim McNabb continued his strong defence taking the points on numerous players. Shane Sweep weaved his way through for a couple after being on the receiving end of a few generous kicks. Craig Peisley kicked well and Danny snuck forward to kick a few late goals "resting" after feeling tender from his UTS game earlier in the day. Christian managed to get a couple with plenty of assistance and vocal support from Churchy. Bunny arrived late and was put straight on the ball with an immediate impact. Jim Roche got plenty of ball all day and managed to put a few on the board with some "Travolta-ish" side steps.

The pace in the last quarter didn't slow and the ball went end to end on numerous occasions. There were starting to be some tired legs, Craig was showing a limp and Mick Jeffrey had done a calf injury. Thanks to the new guys that turned up and performed very well.

It was another enjoyable game with the numbers meaning there was plenty of space to run into and some good clean passages of play.
